- The vine produces oval or round fruits with a tough rind that can be purple or yellow, depending on the variety. Inside, the fruit contains a juicy, aromatic pulp with numerous small, edible seeds.
- Flowers: It has striking, fragrant flowers with five greenish-white sepals, five white petals, and a distinctive corona of white filaments that are showy purple at the bases.
