Sarracenia purpurea subsp. venosa (Southern Purple Pitcher Plant) is a compact, carnivorous perennial native to US coastal plain bogs. It features short, squat, reddish-veined pitchers that collect rainwater to drown insects. Key care requirements include full sun, constantly moist, nutrient-poor soil (peat/perlite), and water filled in the pitchers.

  • Light: Full sun is essential for robust growth and deep coloration.
  • Watering: Keep the soil constantly wet by placing the pot in a saucer filled with distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis water. Unlike other pitchers, these should be top-watered to keep their pitchers filled with water.
  • Soil: Use a nutrient-free mixture, typically a 4:1 ratio of sphagnum peat moss to perlite.
  • Temperature & Dormancy: These plants need a, cool-to-cold winter dormancy (temperatures in the 20s-50s°F) and are best grown outdoors, though they can handle indoor, sunny conditions.
  • Feeding: They do not need fertilizer and catch their own food (ants, flies, bugs), but if grown indoors, you can lightly feed them.
