Jatropha podagrica, also known as the Buddha belly plant or gout plant, is a succulent shrub native to Central America.  It features a swollen, bottle-shaped base, giving it the nickname "Buddha belly." This caudex stores water, allowing the plant to thrive in arid environments. The plant produces large, lobed leaves and clusters of bright red or coral-colored flowers.
